Patrol History

Snö Mountain Ski Patrol, formerly The Montage Ski Patrol originated in the weeks before the newly built Montage Mountain Ski Area was about to open in December of 1984. The patrol was headed initially by Sandy Scull and assisted by Al Evans who later replaced Sandy as patrol director. Besides these two National Ski Patrollers there where five other NSP members which transferred to this newly formed patrol from other mountains. The rest of the patrol was made up of 35 candidates who had just completed their Red Cross Advanced First aid class. They where trained to NSP Standards and upgraded to basic patrollers by early January when another group of candidates came on. The season ended with a patrol of over 50 members. Our patrol has flourished to just under 100 patrollers.

Both the County and private developers have invested substantial amount of dollars in the construction of recreational facilities, housing developments and Corporate headquarters. Lackawanna County developed a minor league baseball stadium, which is the home of the New York Yankee ’s, an AAA minor league team. This Stadium holds 10,000 fans and is located approximately 2 miles from the ski area. Additionally the County built an outdoor amphitheater which seats up to 17,000 people and located adjacent to the mountain. This facility is used for outdoor concerts and is managed by Clear channel, a nationally recognized concert specialist. Last year the mountain hosted Tom Petty, Dave Mathews, Allman Brother, and Meat Loaf along with many other recognized bands. The Amphitheater host up to 17 concerts annually. The Counties Visitor Center is located at the base of the Mountain and a trolley connects Central Scranton with the Center.
Marriott has recently constructed a “Courtyard by Marriott” across from the Visitors Center. This Hotel has 120 rooms and is approximately 1 mile from the mountain. Cinemark has 10 movie theaters in a retail mall, which includes Ruby Tuesday’s, Johnny Rocket’s and several other restaurants. Currently a high end Retail Mall is being constructed with over a 100 stores and is expected to open by Thanksgiving of 2006. Glenmaura National Golf Club was constructed in 1990 and designed by Michael Hurdzan. The course was the host of the N E Pennsylvania Classic in June of 2004, which is PGA National Tour event. This course is close to seven thousand yards in length and is built over wetlands. “Golf Magazine” rated the course 11th Best in the State. The Golf Course is approximately 1 mile from the Mountain. A large upscale residential housing development was constructed adjacent to the golf course and is named Glenmaura. This development includes a wide variety of 5,000 square feet houses along with upscale condos. The price of these houses are $500,000 on up. This development continues to expand and most of the developable lots are sold. The Mountain is the North East corporate headquarters for CIGNA, Bank of America, and Met Life. Additionally the Mountain houses Geisinger Health System, Legg Mason and several other corporate offices.
